India - Weavers Worried As Price Of Unfinished Fabric Decrease
Weavers in the powerloom sector in the country's biggest Man-Made Fibre (MMF) hub in the city are facing tough days ahead with the prices of grey or unfinished fabrics witnessing a sharp decrease in the past one week.
Industry sources said the demandfor unfinished fabrics has decreased in the local market and that the prices have gone down by Rs 1.50 to Rs 2 per meter with the textile traders discontinuing the purchase due to less demand from the key consuming centres across the country.
Grey fabric traders in the city said there is a sharp fall in the demandfor unfinished fabrics as the buying for the marriage season isalmost over. There are no fresh orders from the textile traders as the demand for saris and dress material has decreased significantly in the past one week.
The powerloom sector in the city weaves around 2.5 crore meters of grey fabrics per day. The unfinished fabric is purchased by the textile traders and sent for further processing at the dyeing and printing units for the final finish.
Ashok Jirawala, president of Federation of Gujarat Weavers Association (FOGWA) said, "The prices in various grey fabric qualities have decreased by Rs 1.50 to Rs 2 per meter. The powerloom weavers are in a big difficulty as the stock of yarn is still lying in huge quantities in the powerloom units."
